Mathematics
Explore the Mathematics programmes at ACS, from early numeracy support to enrichment for gifted learners, all designed to build confidence and a love for the subject.
Vision
To nurture innovative mathematical thinkers and resourceful problem solvers who embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. We envision a learning community where rigorous reasoning thrives, and the joy of mathematical discovery inspires lifelong learning.
Mission
To equip students with mathematical problem-solving competency and a collaborative spirit to tackle real-world challenges. Through inquiry-based learning and thoughtfully designed tasks, we foster the confidence, curiosity, and creativity needed to see mathematical thinking as a powerful tool for understanding and shaping the world.
Our Approach to Math Learning
Our lessons are designed around three interconnected elements — confidence, curiosity, and creativity — that together form the foundation for lifelong mathematical learning.
We build confidence through structured approaches such as C-P-A (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract), CUB, and STAR. By breaking problems into manageable steps, students develop resilience and see themselves as capable mathematical thinkers.
We spark curiosity through inquiry-based activities that invite exploration and discovery. Manipulatives and interactive play stations encourage students to ask questions and investigate mathematical concepts hands-on.
We nurture creativity by connecting mathematics to real-life contexts. Through open-ended tasks and collaborative problem-solving, students explore multiple solution pathways and develop flexible mathematical reasoning.
Together, these elements create an environment where students experience the excitement of mathematical discovery and build the problem-solving competency needed for real-world challenges.
Programmes and Initiatives
Problem-Solving @ ACS(P)
We adopt structured problem-solving approaches to make thinking visible and build mathematical reasoning at every level.
CUB Approach (P1–P3)
Builds number sense, basic operations, and mathematical vocabulary. At P2, it is adapted to bridge students towards more abstract concepts and multi-step reasoning.
C — Circle numbers
U — Underline key words
B — Box the question
STAR Approach (P4–P6)
Supports students in tackling complex problems that integrate multiple mathematical concepts.
S — Study the problem
T — Think of a plan
A — Act on the plan
R — Reflect on the solution
Play @ ACS(P)
Physical and digital manipulatives, alongside play stations, develop deep conceptual understanding through the C-P-A approach. Manipulatives bridge concrete experiences and abstract thinking — helping students understand the "why" behind mathematical procedures, not just the "how". Play stations create opportunities for peer collaboration and inquiry, fostering curiosity and joy in learning.
Inquiry-Based Learning @ ACS(P)
Open-ended tasks and purposeful questioning cultivate deeper mathematical thinking, creativity, and communication. Questions such as "What do you notice?", "Can you find another way?", and "How do you know?" guide students to investigate, reason, and construct their own understanding — reinforcing that mathematics involves creativity and choice, not merely prescribed procedures. Formative assessment is embedded throughout, allowing teachers to monitor understanding and make timely instructional adjustments.
Learning Support Programmes
P1–P4: Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM)
Early intervention support to strengthen foundational mathematical skills.
P2: Math Bridging Programme
Builds early numeracy skills including counting, sorting, and pattern recognition.
P5–P6: Remedial Programme
Weekly small-group sessions providing targeted support to consolidate mastery of mathematical concepts.
Stretch Programmes
P4 & P5: E2K Mathematics
For students with exceptional mathematical potential, E2K fosters critical thinking and resilience through challenging problem-solving tasks.
