Discover how ACS (Primary)'s Tamil Language programme builds confident, values-driven learners through enrichment activities, cultural events, and community partnerships.
Vision
At ACS (Primary), we aim to provide a holistic education that will help develop our students in all the four main areas, namely Affective, Cognitive, Social and Physical. The Mother Tongue Department (Tamil Language) seeks to provide a linguistically exciting, culturally vibrant, and morally positive environment for our students. We believe such a learning environment will be conducive for our students’ development in these four main areas.
Curriculum
The Tamil Language curriculum is designed to nurture confident communicators, independent learners and creative thinkers who are equipped with strong language proficiency, cultural appreciation and 21st Century Competencies. We strive to make Tamil a living language by providing authentic and meaningful learning experiences that enable students to communicate with fluency, confidence and purpose. Through inquiry-based learning, purposeful use of educational technology and collaborative learning experiences, students develop critical and inventive thinking, strengthen their communication skills, and cultivate sound values and social-emotional competencies. Above all, we aspire to foster a lifelong love for the Tamil language and the joy of learning.
Assessment
Assessment is seamlessly integrated into teaching and learning to support students' growth and progress. Guided by Assessment for Learning (AfL) principles, teachers provide timely feedback and meaningful opportunities for students to reflect on their learning and set goals for improvement. Students develop six core language competencies: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Interactive Conversation and Interactive Writing, enabling them to communicate effectively and confidently in authentic contexts.
Listening and Speaking
Students develop active listening and oral communication skills through a wide range of authentic texts, including stories, literary texts, speeches, news reports and advertisements. They learn to listen critically, interpret ideas and respond thoughtfully. Through structured discussions, presentations and collaborative learning activities, students build confidence in expressing their ideas clearly and effectively. Our customised Oral Programme progressively develops students' ability to describe, discuss and evaluate topics, while Primary 5 and Primary 6 students engage in current affairs and higher-order thinking discussions.
Reading and Writing
Students explore a rich variety of literary and informational texts to develop comprehension, critical thinking and language appreciation. Explicit instruction in reading strategies, vocabulary acquisition and writing techniques enables students to respond thoughtfully to texts and produce purposeful writing for different audiences and contexts. Scaffolded learning experiences help students become confident and independent readers and writers.
Interactive Conversation and Interactive Writing
Students participate in meaningful conversations where they learn to articulate ideas, justify opinions, build on others' perspectives and communicate respectfully. Interactive writing tasks encourage students to write with a clear purpose and audience, applying language creatively and effectively in authentic situations.
To support progressive language development, we have designed a comprehensive suite of curriculum resources for Primary 3 to Primary 6. These include structured oral, comprehension and composition packages that reinforce classroom learning and cater to students' learning needs. Regular practice and formative assessments help students develop examination readiness, effective time-management skills and confidence, while cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Tamil language.
Programme
Mother Tongue Languages Fortnight
Primary 1 - Primary 6
Mother Tongue Languages Fortnight Programme is tailored to enhance the appreciation of language and culture. The activities are conducted for students to appreciate the language and culture better. It also seeks to inculcate in students a deeper understanding of values.
Values in Action (VIA)
Primary 1 - Primary 6
Students can extend the values learnt in school to the community at large through our Values in Action (VIA) Programme. Our partnership with Sree Narayana Mission is an avenue for students to integrate values, care for the less fortunate, physically challenged and appreciate their own blessings.
Learning Support/ Stretch Programmes
Mother Tongue Support Programme
Primary 3 - Primary 4
The Mother Tongue Support Programme (MTSP) provides targeted support for Primary 3 and Primary 4 students who require additional scaffolding in their language learning. We believe that every child can succeed in learning Tamil when provided with appropriate support and meaningful learning experiences. Through differentiated instruction and engaging activities, the programme builds students' confidence, strengthens their foundational language skills, and encourages the use of Tamil in authentic, everyday contexts. Our goal is to nurture active learners who develop a positive attitude towards the language and experience the joy of learning.
Remedial Programme
Primary 5 - Primary 6
The Remedial Programme provides focused and timely intervention to support students in strengthening their foundational language competencies. Lessons are carefully designed to address individual learning gaps through explicit instruction, guided practice and personalised feedback. By reinforcing core language skills and equipping students with effective learning strategies, the programme enables students to make steady progress, build confidence and become more independent learners.
